Comparative Environmental Analysis for Using Waste Polyethylene and Steel Slag in Semi-dense Asphalt Pavements

چکیده
This study presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) evaluating the use of virgin materials, waste polyethylene (PE), and electric arc furnace steel slag (EAFSS) in semi-dense asphalt (SDA) surface courses, which is primarily used for low-noise pavements. Three types SDA mixtures with PE, EAFSS were prepared water sensitivity tests conducted to determine mechanical performance. The LCA defined three scenarios using system expansion, namely (1) reference scenario materials disposal PE by municipal solid incineration (MSWI) landfill, respectively; (2) test straight run binder SDA, landfilling EAFSS; (3) MSWI. data from experiments, Swiss industries, official reports, standard databases inventory analysis. results show that compared reference, would reduce 15 % 36 greenhouse gases emissions, respectively. reason improved environmental performance when can be attributed replace polymer-modified avoided For scenario, attributable landfilling. also indicate recycling not have benefits nonrenewable cumulative energy demand.

Steel Slag Utilization in Asphalt Mixes
Steel slags are the major byproduct from the conversion of iron to steel in the basic oxygen (major type), electric arc and open hearth (minor type) steelmaking processes. Steel recovery from the slag results in a processed aggregate with both positive (wear resistant, skid resistant, rough textured, angular, well graded, stripping resistant) and negative (heavy, expansive) features. Considerab...
متن کاملComparison of Environmental Implications of Asphalt and Steel-Reinforced Concrete Pavements
The public, industry, and governments have become increasingly interested in green design and sustainable development. Construction activities affect the environment significantly, so environmental issues should be considered seriously. Thousands of miles of roads are paved every year with asphalt and steel-reinforced concrete. What are the environmental effects of the two materials? If asphalt...
متن کاملPerformance Improvement of Porous Asphalt Mixtures using Crumb Rubber and Steel Slag Powder
In recent decades, porous asphalt has been extended for surface drainage in various regions throughout the world. The permeability of porous asphalt has an important role in the performance of asphalt pavements in the rainy weather. The most remarkable problem related to the porous asphalt is its short service time. Considerable efforts have been made to enhance the mechanical properties of por...
متن کاملRut Resistant Asphalt Pavements
The three major distress conditions affecting the performance of asphalt pavements are permanent deformation or rutting, fatigue or load associated cracking, and low temperature or thermal cracking. In an earlier technical topics article (Fall, 1998), we examined the causes of fatigue cracking and the importance of good compaction during construction to help minimize this type of distress. In t...
متن کاملFatigue Behavior Analysis of Asphalt Mixes Containing Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Steel Slag
This research was conducted in order to evaluate fatigue behavior of asphalt mixes containing Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel slag. After initial evaluation of the properties of EAF steel slag using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electric Microscope (SEM), six sets of laboratory mixtures were prepared. Each set were treated replacing various portions of limestone aggregates of the mix wi...
